November 17: International Students' Day!

Today, November 17th, we celebrate: International Students' Day!

International Students' Day is celebrated every year on November 17th, having been officially declared in 1941 by the International Students' Council to commemorate the events of 1939 in Prague.

November 17th: International Students' Day. How did this holiday come about and when was it first celebrated?

November 17th was officially declared International Students' Day in 1941 by the International Students' Council to commemorate the events of 1939 that took place in Prague. In 1939, Nazi occupiers in Czechoslovakia suppressed a demonstration by students from the Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague, which marked the creation of an independent Czechoslovak Republic. As a result of the suppression of the demonstrations, nine students died, and over 1,200 were sent to concentration camps.

International Students' Day was marked for the first time in 1941, in London, by the International Students' Council (which included many refugees) in full agreement with the warring allies, and the tradition was maintained by the International Union of Students.

We wish all students to choose the path of knowledge and to be successful. Those who wish to have an international experience during their student years can travel and improve their knowledge by applying for Erasmus+ programs.  We congratulate you on the partnerships that UTMhas consolidated. We wish all our international students and scholars at UTM a happy birthday!
