On January 21, 2026, Professor, University, Doctor, Habilitation Lucian Dorobanțu, faculty member of Faculty of Medicine of Titu Maiorescu University of Bucharest and renowned cardiovascular surgeon, has achieved the world's first complete repair of a „hammock” mitral valve”, prin Aortic root — o world's absolute surgical premiere.
The intervention aimed to correct a extremely rare congenital heart malformations and was performed successfully at NORD Pipera Hospital, a partner medical institution of Titu Maiorescu University. The innovative procedure marks a milestone in international cardiac surgery, demonstrating the level of excellence achieved by Romanian medicine and its related university school.
Prof. Univ. Dr. Habil. Lucian Dorobanțu leads Cardiovascular Surgery Department within the NORD Pipera Hospital, a department currently in the final stage of obtaining the necessary approvals to become Cardiovascular Surgery Department, consolidating its portfolio of top-tier associated university clinics Faculty of Medicine UTM.
At the same time, the function of Medical Director of NORD Pipera Hospital is owned by Conf. Univ. Dr. Dan Ulmeanu, also a faculty member of the Faculty of Medicine UTM, who made an essential contribution to the development and implementation of the clinical departments within this hospital.
