167 years ago, a major project of national history was realized: The Union of the two Principalities, through the double election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, in Iași and Bucharest. It was a historic project, a National Project, in today's terms, initiated and accomplished by the Romanian political and cultural elites, with the support of the Romanian people. Cuza's reign an era of construction, through the major reforms initiated and carried out by the ruler, a period of building modern Romania and aligning the country with European civilization. Cuza's Union represented a fundamental moment in the process of modernizing and developing the country, which culminated in the Great Union and the creation of Greater Romania. On the occasion of the day January 24th, Titu Maiorescu University expresses its gratitude to the founders of Modern Romania and to the Romanian people who supported the Grand Project of the Union.
At the same time, Cuza's Union offers the academic community greater a frame of deep reflection on the lesson that this exemplary page of history offers to the present. Several elements stand out essential: the role of elites in history and the edification process, the need for vision, consciousness, responsibility, patriotism from the political class before the nation, the importance achievement a National Project, of cross-party solidarity around it, the necessity of creating a broad national synergy in the direction of the national interest.
History offers us a lesson from which we, today, must learn. Today's Romania must learn from yesterday's Romania for tomorrow's Romania. This process demands competence, vision, conscience, ethical values, responsibility, accountability, awareness of national identity, and, last but not least, patriotism.
