Arrival and Orientation
Before Arrival
Ensure you have all necessary documents: a valid passport, visa (if required), and health insurance/ European Health Insurance Card. Romania has a temperate climate, with hot summers and cold winters, so please pack accordingly.
Consider setting up an international bank account, especially if you are travelling from non-EU countries or check currency exchange options. Plan your trip with a destination at Henri Coandă International Airport, the main air gateway to Bucharest
Arrival in Bucharest
From the airport, you can reach the city by train, bus, or taxi:
- Bus: The Express Line 100 offers a direct connection to the city center. The bus is available 24/7, and tickets can be purchased at the airport.
- Train: There is also a train service from the airport to Gara de Nord, Bucharest’s main railway station. From there, you can easily reach different parts of the city using the metro.
- Taxi: Official taxi services are available outside the arrivals terminal. We recommend using authorized taxi companies to ensure a fair and safe ride. Authorized taxis can be ordered from the yellow machines located outside the international arrivals gate (after baggage claim). You will receive a printed ticket with the details of your car.
Orientation Program
Erasmus students are strongly encouraged to participate in our orientation program (Welcome Day for Erasmus+ students), designed to help them get familiar with the campus, meet faculty and staff, and interact with fellow students. These sessions address academic expectations and offer guidance on cultural adaptation.
The orientation program is usually held during the first week of the academic year for students arriving in the first semester, and the first week of the second semester for those starting their mobility then.
Erasmus Student Network UniBucharest (ESN UniBucharest) plays an important role in supporting Erasmus+ students throughout their mobility experience. With a network of local volunteers, ESN UniBucharest offers practical assistance, including orientation sessions, cultural events, and social activities to help students integrate into their new environment. They also provide information about housing, transportation and academic resources, ensuring that students feel welcomed and well-informed during their time abroad. This supportive community fosters connections among international and local students, enriching the overall Erasmus experience.
For more information or assistance, students can contact ESN UniBucharest at contact@unibucharest.esn.ro or visit their website at www.unibucharest.esn.ro

ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation in dormitories
- Accommodation for incoming Erasmus+ students at Titu Maiorescu University can be arranged upon request in our dormitories, located at Blvd. Gheorghe Șincai, No. 16, Sector 4, Bucharest;
- Students intending to be accommodated in the dormitory must specify this in the application form;
- Accommodation consist of 2-room apartments, each with 2 beds per room, meaning you will share the room with another TMU student;
- The accommodation fee ranges from 160 to 220 Euros, with all bills included;
- For more detailed information about dormitory accommodation, please refer to the document provided here.
Private accommodation
Renting an apartment nearby is an option for those seeking more independence. This can be arranged through a real estate agent or privately via public websites. The best apartments are often found through local contacts and friends, and students usually pay a security deposit, which is usually equivalent to one month’s rent. We also recommend joining Social Media groups for international students to find housing advice and tips.
Here are some rental price ranges:
- Studio apartment: 250 to 300 Euros per month
- Two-bedroom apartment: 300 to 500 Euros per month
In addition to rent, you will also need to cover monthly expenses such as electricity, water, and heating. Prices vary depending on the location in Bucharest; apartments in central areas tend to have higher rents. Flat sharing is quite common, which can reduce costs to under 150 Euros per month. This option not only lowers expenses but also provides a great opportunity for students to make friends and share responsibilities for household chores.

TRANSPORT
- Public Transport: Bucharest has a well-developed public transportation network, including the metro, buses, trolleybuses, and trams. Metrorex operates five metro lines, providing quick access to major city areas. For surface transportation, STB (Bucharest Transport Company) manages buses and trams. We recommend purchasing a transport card, which can be loaded with travel credits or monthly subscriptions.
- Costs: A single trip on the metro or bus costs around 3 RON. Monthly passes are more cost-effective for students, costing approximately 50-70 RON for the metro.
- Taxi and Ride-Sharing: Use popular ride-sharing apps like Uber, Bolt, or Star Taxi for safe and comfortable trips around the city.
COST OF LIVING
- Accommodation: Renting an apartment in Bucharest can range from 250 to 500 Euro per month, depending on location and amenities. Student dormitories are more budget-friendly.
- Food: Dining out can vary from 25-40 RON for a meal in a casual restaurant. Supermarkets and local markets are good options for budget-friendly shopping. TMU has its own cafeteria where students can enjoy lunch at budget-friendly prices. The cafeteria is located at Calea Vacaresti 189 (Timpuri Noi Campus)
- Entertainment: A cinema ticket costs around 20-30 RON, and museum entry fees range from 10-25 RON.
Costs can vary based on each student’s lifestyle; however, you can always consult Numbeo for more tailored information.
LEISURE OPPORTUNITIES
- Cultural Attractions: Visit the Palace of the Parliament, the National Museum of Art, and the Village Museum to immerse yourself in Romanian history and culture;
- Parks: Herăstrău Park, Tineretului Park and Carol Park offer great spaces for relaxation and walks;
- Events: Bucharest hosts numerous music, theater, and film festivals throughout the year. Stay updated with local cultural calendars to catch exciting events.
Testimonials
María del Carmen Conesa Jiménez from Universidad de Murcia (Spain)
Erasmus+ Study Mobility in the academic year 2020-2021
My experience as an Erasmus student in Bucharest was amazing. At first, I was a little bit scared because it was the first time I lived abroad. But it didn’t take me long to realize that Bucharest was the perfect place for an Erasmus mobility. Romania is very affordable compared to other countries like mine (Spain). You can travel around the country, which is very comfortable and cheap, plus you get a 50% student discount). In Bucharest, there are plenty of parks (we often go there to play basketball and have picnics) and pubs (there are a lot of pubs for Erasmus students). Although this year was different due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we managed to travel to several countries (Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, North Macedonia)
About university, I took online classes in English. It was different but no worse than face-to-face classes. I also did my exams in English. My grades were really good, and the professors helped me every time I needed them.
I lived in the university dorms and it was amazing. Near the dorms, there are two metro entrances, it only takes just one stop to be in the center of the city. You can also go to the center by Uber (which costs 10 lei, approximately 2 euros) or rent a bike. There is a large park next to the dorms, called Tineretului Park. You should go there and see the sunset!!
If I had to say something bad about Bucharest, it would be the weather. In February the temperatures can drop below 15°C!
To sum up, I totally recommend Bucharest as an Erasmus destination, and I would choose again Titu Maiorescu University!
