The Union of the Principalities, a Masterful Lesson of History<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 24th of January offers Titu Maiorescu University the opportunity to celebrate a cardinal historical event and to reflect on its significance in the country's history and Romanian becoming.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The union of the two principalities, Moldova and Walla Wallachia, through the double election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, in Iasi and Bucharest, was a political act of fundamental importance in the fulfillment of the Romanians' aspirations for unity, being the cornerstone of the process of building Modern Romania. The Union of the Romanian Principalities under the reign of Cuza was the first step in this complex and difficult process, followed by other fundamental steps, such as the proclamation of Independence (1877), the Kingdom of Romania (1881), culminating in the Great Union (December 1, 1918) and the establishment of Greater Romania. Cuza's reign formed the framework for the development and modernization of the new state, the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, through a series of reforms, the most important of which remain: the secularization of monastery estates, agrarian reform, tax reform, education reform, justice reform, and other major acts such as the electoral law, the organization of the national army, the establishment of institutions, and the first railway line in the country. <\/strong><\/p>\n

A priority of Cuza's extensive reformist work was the organization of Romanian education, a process during which free and compulsory primary education was established, a new educational system was structured, and the country's first universities were founded: the University of Ia\u0219i (1860) and the University of Bucharest (1864). As a significant historical fact, the first rector of the University of Ia\u0219i was Titu Maiorescu, at only 23 years old. Legislative initiatives and administrative measures in the field contributed to the modernization and development of Romanian education on European foundations, to the progressive creation of a modern system, which played an important role in educating and enlightening the people, and in the emancipation of Romanian society.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Union of the Romanian Principalities was the work of an elite generation composed of enlightened politicians and scholars, animated by national aspirations and the renewing European spirit, who knew how to mobilize the people and instill in them the desire for progress in an exemplary national synergy. The significance of the Union of January 24, 1859, remains, therefore, captured in a lesson from history, on whose page are written words that must not lose their value under any circumstances: patriotism, national aspirations and interests, vision, conscience, solidarity and unity, education, intellectual and moral values, wisdom, and spirit of sacrifice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Celebrating the Union of the Principalities, Titu Maiorescu University pays homage with gratitude to those who achieved it and to all those who continued the development process of Romania, and embraces the masterful history lesson for present and future generations.<\/strong><\/p>\n
